Two New Developments at Field Museum

Stress Its Important Role in Science Education

The Field Museum announces a new academic training program for undergraduate scientists. In a first for the institution, the Museum has obtained a three-year Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site grant from the National Science Foundation. This type of grant is usually awarded to colleges and universities. The grant will provide summer internships to support eight highly qualified undergraduates annually.

The REU summer internship program began June 8 and will end with a research symposium on Aug. 15. The interns will conduct research in systematic biology under the supervision and mentorship of Field Museum scientists. Active involvement in scientific projects will complement their classroom training, preparing them for careers in science. For more information on the Museum’s 2009 REU projects, visit: http://www.fieldmuseum.org/

The Field Museum is also home to a new chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The Museum has long played a prominent role in the training and development of scientists interested in natural and cultural diversity.

In addition, many Museum curators have accepted individual faculty appointments at area universities, teaching courses and advising students.

The formation of the new AAUP chapter at the Museum helps to organize the diverse in-house science faculty under a shared set of common goals on matters concerning both teaching and the advancement of science education generally.
