Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land Opens at The Field Museum

CHICAGO, IL – A new exhibition at The Field Museum captures the fragile beauty of the Artic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska through the journey of photographer Subhankar Banerjee. An exhibition of landscapes, wildlife and people of the region, Artic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land opens at The Field Museum on Sunday, February 6.

Banerjee documents the delicate interdependence of animals, plants, humans and their environment in a series of color photographs taken over the course of two years. Trekking more than 4,000 miles of coastal plains, river valleys and rugged mountains by airplane, snowmobile, and on foot, this physicist-turned-photographer has provided a comprehensive look at the abundant wildlife present year-round in the refuge.

Not just a wildlife photographer, Banerjee captures the imposing geological structures of northeast Alaska and tells the story of the resourceful Gwich’in and Inupiate people who live in this harsh and bounteous landscape.

On display in the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Gallery through Sunday, May 8, this exhibition reveals the remarkable biodiversity of this pristine region, presenting a landscape teeming with life even in the bitterest of icy winters. Designed and produced by the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, California, the exhibition is free with Museum admission.

Admission to The Field Museum is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students with ID, $5 for children 3-11. Children age two and under and Museum members are free. Discounts are available for Chicago residents. The Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with the last tickets sold at 4 p.m. For Museum information, call (312) 922-9410 or visit www.fieldmuseum.org.
