Celebrated Vocalist Al Jarreau Sings “Happy Birthday” to T. Rex SUE, Wolfgang Puck Creates SUE Cake

CHICAGO—The Field Museum’s famed T. rex Sue will get an early present for her fifth birthday celebration when five-time Grammy Award-winning vocal performer Al Jarreau sings “Happy Birthday” on Thursday, May 12 at 10 a.m. in the Museum’s Stanley Field Hall. Jarreau will be joined by world-renown chef Wolfgang Puck as part of the Museum’s kickoff for its Sue birthday celebration, held May 14 to 17.

Al Jarreau is sure to sing “Happy Birthday” like it has never been sung before. The jazz vocalist is renowned for his unique sound that has been honed by a career spanning over a quarter century. Jarreau remains the only vocal performer in history to win Grammy Awards in three different categories (Jazz, Pop and R&B) and will help release a new CD, “A T rex Named Sue,” produced by Music for Little People. Jarreau will perform “Bones,” a new song he recorded on the CD.

Wolfgang Puck will put the finishing touches on a Sue-inspired chocolate creation. Puck, internationally recognized for his flagship event, the Governors Ball following the Oscars, and founder of Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, Inc., will demonstrate decorating techniques on a Sue-inspired creation. At 11 a.m., Wolfgang Puck birthday cake will be served following the demonstration in the Museum’s Stanley Field Hall.

The public is invited to the birthday kickoff event. Jarreau will sign “A T. Rex Named Sue” CDs in the Museum’s main hall following his performance, from 11 a.m. until Noon. Guests are able to participate in this opportunity to meet the jazz legend in-person.

Beginning May 12, visitors will have an opportunity preview two huge dinosaurs in the Museum’s Stanley Field Hall. Both are full size replicas of Mamenchisaurus, and are part of an upcoming exhibition, Dinosaur Dynasty: Discoveries from China (opening May 27).

The event precedes the four-day birthday celebration for Sue, the world’s largest and most complete T. rex ever discovered. The Sue Birthday Celebration is May 14-17, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The event will feature festivities for the entire family, including theatrical performances, giant dinosaur puppets and a host of hands-on dinosaur activities. On May 17, the fifth anniversary of Sue’s unveiling, there will be FREE admission all day and birthday cake for all (while supplies last) at 11 a.m.!

The Field Museum is located at 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive. Indoor parking is available at Soldier Field, steps from the Museum’s south entrance. Early bird rates for parking apply before 9:30 a.m. For further information, call (312) 922-9410 or visit www.fieldmuseum.org.

The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust is the generous sponsor of Sue's Fifth Birthday Celebration.
